Venues of CSI

Since the launching of the ministry of CSI in 1992, there have been three specific venues for the ministry:

INTERNATIONALLY: In its 14 year history, CSI has had the privilege of ministering and/or impacting in over 150 countries. The ministry experiences have varied from assisting in evangelizing major events such as regional games, to teaching at conferences on evangelism, to conducting seminars on sports ministry and the church (including church planting seminars), to assisting indigenous sports ministries, to helping athletes and coaches model sports ministry outreach. On occasion, CSI will take competing and/or clinic teams in order to facilitate church planting or to demonstrate sports evangelism in action.

Another facet of CSI’s international work is to assist in establishing regional sports ministry training centers. Currently, CSI is working with churches and parachurch ministries to establish these equipping centers in India, Argentina, Australia (all three in conjunction with a Bible college or institute), England (through churches and Christians in Sport - the largest and most successful sports ministry in the United Kingdom), Hong Kong (through the YMCA, local churches and local parachurch sports ministries), and most recently, Russia (in conjunction with Athletes in Action, International Hockey Ministries, and East-West Ministries).

Rodger also works with the International Sports Coalition, serving on the International Sports Leadership Schools and Church Sports councils.

NATIONALLY: CSI has been a part of several national sports ministry movements (Rodger sits on the board of Sports Outreach America, is on the Education Task Force of the national coalition Church Sports and Recreation Ministers), as well as being a leader in promoting and empowering local churches to incorporate sports ministry into the mainstream of church ministry. CSI has worked directly with individual churches or groups of churches in 18 states; in addition, there has been communication and information and resources shared with churches in another 24 states.

Another significant part of CSI’s national work is to assist Bible colleges and seminaries as they develop course work and/or degrees in the area of Sports Ministry. CSI has had the privilege of assisting two seminaries and five Bible colleges.

LOCALLY: CSI has been working with several dozen churches in the San Jose/San Francisco Bay/Sacramento areas - assisting them in starting or developing the scope of their sports ministry or functioning as a consultant. In addition, CSI has been a catalyst in convening a coalition of churches and agencies called Sports Outreach Bay Area (SOBA); in addition to mobilizing and equipping churches for major event evangelism focused around the World Cup of Soccer in 1994 - 2006  and the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic Games, CSI offers ongoing assistance to the members of SOBA.

Since CSI's move to Lincoln, CA, Rodger has been working with churches in the greater Sacramento area and has initiated a local sports ministry coalition in addition to stimulating and equipping local churches.

The bottom line is that CSI is a servant . . . primarily to a local church, but also to the mission agency or sports parachurch ministry that would want to see the local church planted or strengthened through the vehicle of sports. God has given CSI a unique mission; He has opened doors of ministry and worked through His church and His people to provide the resources to accomplish the mission. We are grateful to God for who He is and for what He has given CSI to do. We are grateful, as well, for what we, by God’s grace, have been able to accomplish in such a short period of time.

To God be the glory.
